Sara Paretsky has dedicated her career to writing against the grain in the male-centric, hardboiled crime detective genre using her character, V.I. Warshawski as her guide. Fifteen books later, Detective Warshawski is still out on Chicago’s streets solving crimes. In Writing in an Age of Silence (2007), Paretsky’s essays examine fading civil liberties in post 9-11 America.
