American Shorts @ WYEP would like to thank everyone who attended and participated in our 2009 summer series events. This season’s diverse literary programming focused on sexuality and faith, Iranian current events, the art of oral storytelling, and the creative process of short-fiction writing. Traversing the globe through words, film, and music, American Shorts @ WYEP transported attendees from Old Testament liaisons to love stories in Tehran, from a night of storytelling in Pittsburgh to heart-wrenching stories of Vietnam from a rising Asian literary star. This ride would not have been possible without the invaluable partnership of WYEP and our creative collaborators, Persad Center, City of Asylum/Pittsburgh, The Moth, photographer Renee Rosensteel, and Whole Foods Market.
We invite you to use the navigation to your left to learn more about each of the four events that were held this past summer. And, as we develop programming for next season, we’ll keep you posted! If you have some great program ideas that are especially good for attracting that distracted summer audience (so much to do…so little time!), please write us at info@pittsburghlectures.org.
About the series:
Since its inception in 2003, American Shorts has attracted a diverse audience to innovative literary events in a variety of local communities and venues. American Shorts programs have consistently included live readings of short literary texts, screenings of independent short films, short selections of live music from local musicians, and an opportunity for social networking over refreshments. This seventh season marked an innovative new partnership between Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures and WYEP to establish a new home base for the series at the WYEP Community Broadcast Center, and to continue our mission: "Words, film, music…under one roof."
Merging the strengths of Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures and WYEP, American Shorts @ WYEP is both a new beginning and a way to continue this unique literary "shorts" franchise, built by everyone involved with American Shorts over the past six years of its development.
